Enterprise Relay is a Dramatic Life Pattern in which an important enterprise moves forward through a succession of projects, with the enterprise being carried from one project to another by changing engagements. An enterprise is larger and more enduring than any single project. It may contain a long series of projects, each realizing only part of what the enterprise is becoming. What connects these projects is not necessarily a fixed plan, but the continuing development of an object through successive objectives.

Enterprise Relay can take two forms: self-relay and other-relay. In self-relay, the same person carries an enterprise across different periods of life. A project completed—or left unfinished—at one point may become the starting point for a later project. The later self does not simply continue the earlier work; they encounter it from a different position and may give it a new objective, form, or direction. The enterprise thus develops through a relay between different moments of the same person's life.

In other-relay, an enterprise passes between different people. One person may initiate a project, another may take up what it has produced or left unresolved, and a later person may turn it into yet another project. The second person does not need to regard themselves as continuing the first person's work. The relay can happen through the object itself: something created, discovered, articulated, or left unfinished in one person's project becomes available for another person's engagement.

In both forms, projects are the concrete units through which the relay takes place. The enterprise remains relatively abstract and continuous, while projects provide the situated occasions in which it is actually pursued. A project can therefore function as a bridge between before and after, between one self and another, and between one objective and the next. What is carried forward may be a result, a question, a concept, a method, a problem, or simply an unfinished possibility.

This is what makes Enterprise Relay a Dramatic Life Pattern rather than merely a pattern of succession. Its drama emerges from the interaction of self–other, before–after, and object–objective. The enterprise persists across changing subjects, changing moments, and changing projects. Sometimes the same person picks up what their earlier self left behind; sometimes another person takes it further. In either case, the enterprise advances because one project creates the conditions for another.
